Student Involvement

There are over 500 student organizations at the University of Kentucky! Students of the Lewis Honors College participate in a wide variety of co-curricular activities. Student organizations focus on professional interests, academic disciplines, recreational sports, cultural awareness, civic engagement, environmental sustainability, hobbies, and much more.

Appalachian Health Initiative

The Appalachian Health Initiative (AHI) is a student organization founded by the late Dr. Douglas Scutchfield. AHI and Dr. Scutchfield were recognized by the Kentucky General Assembly for their positive impact within the Appalachian region in 2023. The goal of the organization is to support healthcare professionals while advocating for health equity within Appalachia. This goal is achieved through outreach in eastern Kentucky and learning opportunities such as collaborating with the University of Kentucky Men's Basketball team to help eastern Kentucky flood victims, attending a Hindman Settlement School presentation by Beth Macy, author of the award-winning book Dopesick, and partnering with multiple other student organizations to host a semi-annual Narcan training. HealthCare Cats

The mission of HealthCare Cats is to "Provide an avenue into college and healthcare opportunities for rural students of Kentucky in order to create a better Commonwealth." Healthcare Cats is an all-encompassing healthcare organization here at UK. We hold a special focus on rural health and the need to combat rural health disparities in the Commonwealth.

Club activities include guest speakers, group network events, forums from health colleges, presentations to high schools, mentoring program, and community service.

This organization can greatly benefit you as you head into any of the healthcare fields in the future!

Honors College Student Council

Honors College Student Council serves to provide Honors students with service and social opportunities while best representing student interests in the college. We host monthly socials (like mocktails and movies) along with town halls to allow students to meet one another while providing feedback about their Honors experience to better shape the community to fit our needs. John Locke Society

The mission of the John Locke Society is to serve the University of Kentucky community by providing a forum for the friendly and robust exchange of ideas about liberty, responsibility, and the public good. The Society seeks to assist its members in sharpening their own arguments and in understanding differing points of view in an atmosphere of mutual respect. People of all viewpoints and political persuasions are welcome in the Society, provided that they demonstrate respect towards all discussion participants. To further its mission, the Society organizes reading groups, hosts discussions on various topics, and brings guest speakers to campus. The Society is based at the Lewis Honors College, and its activities and events are open to the entire University of Kentucky community. Lewis Student Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Coalition

In addition to the student representatives on the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coalition, a group of Lewis Honors College students advocates for students from underrepresented and minoritized groups, as well as first-generation college students, and to generate ideas for building a culture of belonging at Lewis Honors College. They coordinate programs such as film viewings, panel discussions, Heritage Month observations, workshops, and other activities promoting inclusive excellence. They also attend recruitment events to share student perspectives of the Lewis Honors College experience. All Lewis Honors College students are welcome to join the coalition. Take a Tampon

Take a Tampon works to provide and advocate for free and accessible menstrual hygiene products on campus and in our Kentucky community. Take a Tampon provides quality menstrual hygiene products in select bathrooms across the UK's campus and actively collaborates with the university in hopes of providing menstrual hygiene products in all bathrooms on campus. Members also work to enact change on a state level by collaborating with state legislators on bills related to menstrual equity and providing menstrual education to students and the community. We are always excited to meet new students and would love for anyone to come join us in the push for menstrual equity!
