How to Honor the Balance
One way I “honor the balance” is by carving out time to create. Whether painting a canvas, drafting a poem, or experimenting with a new project, making something helps me reset and recharge. Creativity allows me to process the world around me while also reminding me to pause, notice, and appreciate small details. Even on my busiest days, sketching a doodle on a sticky note or sitting outside and writing down a few words about how I'm feeling helps me return to my work with more clarity and joy.
For students, I recommend honoring the balance by giving themselves permission to nurture what brings them energy outside of coursework. That could mean exercising, journaling, spending time with friends, or exploring a creative outlet. If you get a chance, try pottery painting! There are a couple of locations around Lexington, and even my self-proclaimed “non-creative” friends have thoroughly enjoyed it. Balance doesn’t have to mean doing everything equally; it means knowing what recharges you and making space for it so that you can thrive both academically and personally.
