LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2026) — Evolutionary biologist Scott Solomon will discuss his recently released book “Becoming Martian” 4- 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Lewis Scholars Lounge.

Lewis Honors College, Humanity in Deep Space, and Kentucky Space Futures are co-hosting this free public event. Solomon will discuss how living beyond Earth could reshape human bodies, minds, and society. He will also answer questions and sign copies of his book, which is available for purchase on-site.

This event serves as the launch of the statewide initiative Kentucky Space Futures, which is co-founded by Humanity In Deep Space, the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation, and KY Innovation, an agency of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

The initiative aims to facilitate collaboration among Kentucky’s research institutions, educational organizations, and commercial space enterprises while building capacity in the interdisciplinary aspects of the state’s expanding space footprint. Organizers say the effort will also encourage critical thinking and bold problem-solving to address the complex challenges surrounding space exploration.

“We are excited to be the venue where this important initiative kicks off as the University of Kentucky seeks to facilitate learning, expand knowledge, and serve a global community by disseminating, sharing, and applying that knowledge,” said Laura Bryan, Ph.D., interim dean of the Lewis Honors College. “Our honors programming strives to bring scholars, students, and the public together to engage in big-picture thinking and future-facing questions.”

Kentucky Space Futures seeks to position the Commonwealth more deliberately within the expanding off-Earth economy, which is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2035, according to industry estimates. In addition to advancing science and technology, the initiative highlights the importance of space law, design, ethics, and the humanities in shaping long-term space development.

The initiative will promote resources and competitive advantages that make Kentucky an attractive location for current and future space-related companies and organizations.
